Burton Constable Hall & Grounds

One of the few photos taken inside the hall.

The Long Gallery is on the upper floor of the west front. It was completed by the end of the sixteenth century, none of the present interior is from that time. The panelling dates from the late seventeenth century, as does the marble fireplace. The bookcases were put in place in the 1740's. The Neo Jacobean plasterwork on the ceiling and frieze dates from the 1830's during a programme of extensive redecoration.

In 1610 the Gallery would have been sparsely furnished, and is likely to have remained that way throughout the seventeenth century. There would have been few items of furniture apart from a few chairs and one or two chests. The floor would either have been bare oak boards or covered with matting. This changed in the 1740's when Cuthbert Constable ordered the estate joiner Thomas Higham to cut away sections of the panelling and install thirteen large elm and mahogany bookcases for his large library.

In 1833 more work was undertaken. The decorative plasterwork ceiling and frieze were installed, although it was not until 1854 that a local company from Hull were employed to paint the ceiling. The room was sumptuously furnished with new curtains, new carpet, carved and gilded furniture. Most of the marble comes from Italy.

Looking through the far end you can see the upper staircase hall, which along with the lower staircase hall was painted in bright yellow in the 1970's. A guide told me that some people love it, others hate it, previously it had been a muted grey colour.

Personally I think I would have preferred the Long Gallery it as it was in 1610, sparsely furnished with wooden floors, this is way over the top for my taste.

Thank you for your visit and your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

Great shot Ruth, I'm trying to imagine it being sparsely furnished. It took them a long time to complete the interior, amazing job.
